Retro Gaming Community Saves Massive 385TB Archive from Vanishing Forever
In the retro gaming fan community, work is boiling: caring users are saving a unique online archive that stored 385 TB of ROM files.
What is known
The data was hosted on the Myrient service, which opened in 2022, but due to the massive increase in memory and storage prices, enthusiast support for such a project became impossible, and at the end of March, the archive will cease to exist. A huge number of retro games could have disappeared without a trace, as they have not been preserved in digital sales or on physical media. However, the extinction of retro games will not happen — Save Myrient moderator reported that enthusiasts have completed copying the site's archive and have saved all the files.
The files will temporarily reside on a Myrient “mirror”, but in the future, enthusiasts plan to revive the archive.
Of course, the loss of old games would be indifferent to most modern gamers, but the cohesion of the retro community clearly demonstrates that many problems can only be overcome with coordinated efforts.
