Sony has started rolling out the new PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) scaling technology for the PlayStation 5 Pro.

PSSR 2 will be available to all owners of the powerful console with the installation of the corresponding system update, which is being distributed in stages and may be released in some regions in a few days.

What is known

PSSR 2 provides higher quality image upscaling, making games in native 1080p resolution look as if they are running in 4K while maintaining high performance — 60 FPS and above.

Sony and AMD have slightly accelerated ray tracing and improved the algorithm for filling in missing pixels, resulting in a significantly more detailed and realistic picture without additional load on the processor.

PlayStation 5 Pro owners can manually activate the new version of PSSR for all games through system settings. In addition, developers of several games have already prepared native patches with support for the updated technology.

First games with PSSR 2 support:

  • Silent Hill 2 Remake
  • Silent Hill f
  • Alan Wake 2
  • Control
  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
  • Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II
  • Nioh 3
  • Rise of the Ronin
  • Monster Hunter Wilds
  • Dragon’s Dogma 2
  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard
  • Resident Evil Requiem

On March 20, the action game Crimson Desert will join them, and in the coming weeks, Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin's Creed Shadows will receive patches.

Digital Foundry experts have already tested the performance of PSSR 2 and have stated that the technology significantly transforms the image, eliminating the main shortcomings of the first version.
