The head of the Nothing brand, Carl Pei, is a big fan of AI technologies. Recently, the company allowed its smartphone users to independently create widgets and small applications for personalized tasks. However, the CEO of Nothing believes that globally mobile applications are already outdated and may soon be completely replaced by more efficient AI agents.

Carl Pei's Vision of the Future of Mobile Gadgets

During his speech at the SXSW conference, Carl Pei reasonably noted that since the appearance of the iPhone (almost 20 years!), the concept of human interaction with a smartphone has changed very little. According to him, to organize a meeting, for example, it is necessary to sequentially use several applications: messengers, map, calendar, taxi or transport rental, booking a place — all of this takes a lot of time. Pei believes that it is more optimal to use an AI agent that, upon receiving a request, will take on all these tasks, allowing the user to focus on other activities.

According to Pei, the current model of smartphone usage has changed very little over the past 20 years. Users still interact with devices through separate applications, between which they need to switch to perform simple tasks.

An AI agent, unlike standard offerings, can understand the context of a request and consider goals, which means it can better assist in fulfilling the request.

Pei noted that moving away from traditional applications will render modern interfaces with the home screen and app lists irrelevant. The businessman is confident that in the future, devices will be created more with the needs of agents in mind than with a focus on comfort and intuitive human management.

Carl Pei acknowledges that such a system will require significant resources and a lot of time, and also agents will not immediately be able to independently perform multi-stage tasks, but he is confident that this concept will replace familiar applications.
