The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: Stunning Visuals Can't Save Chaotic Plot, Critics Disappointed Again
Today, the full-length animated film The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which is a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), premiered in cinemas worldwide.
At the time, the first part received mediocre reviews from critics, although it was warmly received by audiences and became a commercially successful project.
Well, three years later, the situation may exactly repeat itself, but critics are even more dissatisfied with the animated film.
Even Yoshi doesn't save it
The initial expert ratings were extremely low. On Metacritic, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie scored 37 points, and on Rotten Tomatoes it has only 44% “freshness”. For comparison, the previous film had 46 and 59% respectively.
Critics note that the artists, designers, animators, and composer did an excellent job, making every frame on screen look colorful and spectacular, accompanied by an excellent soundtrack. However, the artistic value of Galaxy Movie is questionable. Early reviews report a jumbled storyline, shallow characters, a huge number of irrelevant references that do not affect the narrative, and overall chaotic nature of the film — it is beautiful but absolutely uninteresting, and according to critics, it may appeal exclusively to Mario fans, while those unfamiliar with the franchise would be better off paying attention to other premieres.
