Meet the Tiny $79 Xteink X3: A Magnetic E-Ink Reader That Attaches to Your Smartphone
The Chinese startup Xteink has introduced a device that can become the perfect accessory for book lovers on the go. The Xteink X3 is an ultra-compact E-Ink reader that attaches to the back panel of an iPhone or Android smartphone with a magnetic case.
Xteink X3 is a new version of the Xteink X4 reader introduced in 2025, but now the device has become even smaller.
Compact and convenient
The main feature of the novelty is its portability. The Xteink X3 weighs only 58 grams, and its thickness is less than 5 mm (98 × 64 × 4.98 mm). The device is equipped with a 3.7” electronic ink (E-Ink) display with a pixel density of 250 PPI, which ensures high text clarity, comparable to high-quality printing.
Unlike most modern gadgets, the screen here is not touch sensitive. The interface is controlled using physical buttons on the case, which prevents accidental presses when you hold the reader in your hands.
Magnetic attachment and new features
Thanks to the built-in magnets, the Xteink X3 is compatible with MagSafe accessories and the Qi2 standard. This allows it to be securely attached to the body of an iPhone, starting from iPhone 12, or other smartphones that support magnetic rings.
What's new in the X3 model:
- Gyroscope: pages can be turned by simply shaking the device;
- NFC-chip: expands interaction capabilities with accessories;
- Pogo-pins: special contacts for convenient charging;
- Memory: a 16 GB microSD card is included. Books can be copied to the card or transferred from a smartphone wirelessly.
Autonomy
Despite its tiny 650 mAh battery, the energy-efficient E-Ink screen allows the device to operate for 10 to 14 days without recharging (assuming 1 to 3 hours of reading per day).
Price and availability
The Xteink X3 is already on sale in the manufacturer's official online store. The price of the device is a very affordable $79.
