Critics Slam Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Yet It Scores Massive $372.5M Global Debut Weekend
On April 1, the premiere of Super Mario Galaxy Movie took place — an animated film about the adventures of Nintendo's famous characters. Critics slammed the novelty in their reviews, calling it beautiful and spectacular, but boring and pointless. Particularly criticized were irrelevant references for the sake of references without any connection to the plot and scene context. But, as it was with the first part in 2023, the new cinematic adventure of Mario aroused immense public interest.
What's known
According to the portal Deadline, during the first weekend of international distribution, Super Mario Galaxy Movie grossed an impressive $372.5 million worldwide. This result became the fifth-largest opening weekend in Universal's history. In comparison, Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2023) had a slightly higher debut result — $387.8 million.
Experts are confident that the sequel will easily reach the $1 billion mark (the first part achieved a final result of $1.3 billion).
It is noteworthy that the Super Mario film franchise also distinguished itself by becoming the first animated series in cinematic history, of which two films could earn more than $350 million in international distribution for the debut weekend.
This success underscores that Nintendo's strategy to expand its intellectual properties beyond gaming consoles is yielding excellent results. Recall that soon there will be a premiere of the live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, which will certainly also attract huge public attention.
