YouTube Premium Tests Auto Speed and On-the-go Features: Streamlined Viewing for Busy Users
YouTube has launched testing of two new options as part of the experiments program for Premium subscribers. The Auto Speed and On-the-go features are designed to save time while watching and make video management more convenient when you're on the move.
Auto Speed: Watch faster without losing the essence
The Auto Speed feature dynamically, and most importantly, automatically changes the video playback speed directly during viewing. Unlike regular acceleration (for example, 1.5x or 2x), this algorithm adapts to the content: it speeds up "stretched" moments but slows down where it is important to catch every word.
The aim of the experiment is to reduce the time spent watching long videos without sacrificing understanding of the meaning. This feature will delight, for example, cooking show fans, who are annoyed by long introductory speeches and lyrical digressions, and now they won't have to rewind the video themselves to the cooking moment.
It is not yet clear how effectively the feature works with non-English content, but for podcast and long interview fans, this could become an indispensable tool.
It is also unclear how the system will distinguish "interesting" moments from "uninteresting" ones, but YouTube promises that users will not miss anything important.
From the author: my test did not show results when activating this feature. Probably, it doesn't work in all regions.
On-the-go: Control on the Move
The On-the-go mode is designed for those who listen to YouTube like a radio or podcast while walking or working out.
What's Changing
The interface becomes as simple as possible. Comments, similar video list, and unnecessary buttons disappear from the screen. Only large, convenient playback control elements remain.
How It Works
The mode can be manually enabled in settings (More > Premium controls). In addition, the app itself will suggest activating it if the smartphone sensors detect movement for 60 seconds with the screen unlocked.
When to Expect Release
Both features are available to YouTube Premium subscribers in the "Experimental Features" section of the mobile app. The current testing phase will last until April 27, 2026. The features are being tested on Android and iOS.
