Fable's Launch May Slip Due to GTA VI, Delaying the Return of an Iconic RPG Series
Playground Games studio is completing the development of the long-awaited reboot of the Fable series. The game was announced in 2020 and for almost all this time, the public was not informed of its details until finally, in January at Xbox Developer Direct, its extensive gameplay demonstration took place. At that time, the authors reported that the new product would be released in the fall of 2026, and later in interviews, game designers separately mentioned that they were not afraid of competition from GTA VI, which is scheduled for release on November 19, as the games are executed in completely different genres and settings. However, perhaps their optimism was slightly exaggerated, as there is now other information appearing.
Still fear
Authoritative insider Jeff Grubb stated in his podcast that the internal schedule of Playground Games could still be adjusted so that Fable comes out later than the announced period. He noted that this does not mean that the release of the fairy-tale RPG will not take place in 2026, but it will most likely be shifted to December — mid or late month. According to Grubb, the team working on the upcoming release is concerned about launching Grand Theft Auto 6 in the same period with Fable.
The situation is complicated by the fact that the game has already been delayed multiple times and such a step will definitely not be warmly received by the public.
Fable will be released on PS5, PC and Xbox Series (and in Game Pass).
What to expect from Fable
Let's recall, the game largely repeats the legendary Fable of Peter Molyneux: familiar enemies will return, structure of tasks, magical abilities, special British humor, and famous chicken kicks, however Albion will become much larger, more diverse, and richer in events.
As in the 2004 game, the plot starts from the childhood of the main hero, after which “heroic abilities” awaken in them, a time skip occurs, and players will see how the young protagonist (whose gender, appearance, and race can be chosen independently) witnesses a tragedy in the native village. Unlike the original, it will not be a fire but a curse by an evil mage who turned the entire village and its inhabitants into stone. And it is the search for the villain that will become the main motivation of the hero.
The developers emphasize the deep reputation system: every action and choice of the player affects the inhabitants' perception of Albion's main hero — they can see him as a hero or a villain.
Freedom of action is the main priority of Playground — from the first minutes of the game, you can visit any location, travel to all corners of Albion, and engage in a large number of activities. Gamers will have the opportunity to start a romance with any NPC, get married, give gifts, buy goods, engage in business, and master other activities.
