Dive into Horror: Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss Launches with Mixed Reviews and Chilling Atmosphere
Today – April 16 – is the release day of a new game inspired by the cult novels of Howard F. Lovecraft. The horror game Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is already available on PS5 and Xbox Series, and will be released on PC in a few hours.
What is known
The publisher Nacon and the studio Big Bad Wolf have released the launch trailer for Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, which reminds us of the plot's premise and showcases the dark atmosphere of the Pacific Ocean depths.
The events of Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss unfold in the near future — in the year 2053. Gamers are tasked with an underwater expedition to search for missing miners, and as agent Noah alongside AI assistant Kee, uncover what is happening at the deep-sea station. The expedition quickly goes awry, with eight team members perishing, leaving the protagonist to face the terrifying monsters of the depths alone.
Players must solve puzzles, search for clues and hints in closed or semi-open locations, explore the sunken city of R'lyeh (R’lyeh), and make choices that affect not only the game world but also the characters. And, of course, confront the ancient terror of Cthulhu.
Unfortunately, early reviews from critics were reserved, although most praised the game's atmosphere, design, and puzzles. However, technical shortcomings and unintuitive task solutions frustrated many experts. On Metacritic, Cthulhu scored 70 points (PS5) and on Opencritic 72 points with only 38% recommendations.
