Google's Android Show on May 12 will preview Aluminum OS and Android 17

Google has confirmed The Android Show: I/O Edition for May 12 at 10 AM PT, a pre-recorded YouTube event focused on consumer announcements. The company is calling 2026 "one of the biggest years for Android yet." A full developer keynote follows at Google I/O on May 19 and 20.

Two events, one strategy

Google first used this split format in 2025, separating consumer product news from the more technical I/O conference. This year the stakes are higher. Android 17 is expected to arrive with a visual refresh and deeper Gemini AI integration. Alongside it, Google is set to formally introduce Aluminum OS — a ground-up desktop operating system built on Android that is designed to replace ChromeOS and take on Windows and macOS directly.

Per Android Central, Android XR and the next phase of Google's AI push are also on the agenda for I/O. The May 12 show is where the consumer-facing announcements land first.

Aluminum OS — what's known so far

Aluminum OS won't be sold as a standalone product. It comes pre-installed on devices from HP, Lenovo, Acer, ASUS, and Samsung, with hardware tiers ranging from entry-level to premium — the top end positioned to compete with MacBooks and high-end Windows laptops. Chrome Unboxed reports that Sameer Samat, Google's Android Ecosystem President, confirmed a Q2–Q3 2026 release window earlier this year.

Gemini sits at the core of the OS, with local processing on the device's NPU handling some AI tasks rather than routing everything to the cloud — a privacy advantage over fully cloud-dependent approaches.

Pricing and specific US or UK availability dates have not been announced. Devices are expected through major global retailers from mid-2026 onward, but nothing is confirmed at the store level yet.

What to watch on May 12

The Android Show streams on YouTube at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET / 6 PM BST. A "Developers Cut" follow-up for engineers drops after the main event. If Google delivers on the Aluminum OS preview and Android 17 details, the May 19 I/O keynote will focus on the AI and platform infrastructure underneath it all.
