Samsung's wide foldable leaks on Alibaba — cases reveal Galaxy Z Fold8 Wide design

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 Wide is no longer just a rumor — protective cases for the device have already appeared on Alibaba, spotted by prolific leaker Ice Universe on May 9. The listing confirms the phone's wider, squarer form factor and places it squarely in a new category of "wide foldables" that Huawei opened first with the Pura X Max in April. Samsung is expected to make it official in July 2026.

The design

The cases back up dimensions that had previously only appeared in rendered leaks: 123.9 × 161.4 × 4.3 mm unfolded, folding down to 123.9 × 82.2 × 9.8 mm. That unfolded thickness is notably slimmer than the Huawei Pura X Max's 5.2 mm, which gives Samsung a meaningful edge in pocketability despite matching its rival's broad footprint. The inner screen measures 7.6 inches with a 16:10 aspect ratio — closer to a small tablet than a typical phone — while a 5.4-inch outer display handles one-handed use. Both panels are OLED, and both carry their own front-facing cameras.

Power comes from a 5,000 mAh battery with 45W wired charging, and the chipset is confirmed as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy — the same top-tier silicon expected across Samsung's 2026 flagship lineup. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide case leak confirms 4:3 ratio and also points to a dual-camera setup on the rear, a step down from the triple-lens array on the standard Z Fold8.

The competition

Huawei shipped the Pura X Max in China on April 20, making it the first wide foldable to reach consumers. Samsung's July timeline puts it roughly three months behind, though the Pura X Max remains China-only with no Western release confirmed. That leaves the Z Fold8 Wide as the first wide foldable most US and UK buyers will actually be able to purchase. Per GSMArena, Samsung's device is slightly narrower when folded (82.2 mm vs. 85 mm for Huawei), reflecting a "refined balance" approach rather than a race to maximum width.

Apple is also expected to enter the wide foldable space with the iPhone Ultra (Fold), but that device hasn't been officially announced and Samsung appears set to beat it to market. The presence of Alibaba case listings already suggests global supply chain preparation is underway — though no US or UK carrier pre-order windows have been announced yet.

Pricing remains unknown. The Z Fold7 launched around $1,899 in the US; the Wide variant could sit above that given the new form factor. July can't come soon enough.
