Subnautica 2 leaked before launch — and the devs aren't threatening anyone
Subnautica 2 hit piracy sites roughly 48 hours before its official early access launch on May 14, 2026 — and developer Unknown Worlds' response couldn't be further from Microsoft's approach with Forza Horizon 6. Rather than threatening permanent bans, the studio simply confirmed the leak, warned players about the risks, and said the builds don't represent the finished game. If you were thinking about downloading one of those files, here's why you probably shouldn't bother.
The leak
Unknown Worlds confirmed to IGN that unofficial builds are circulating online but said the studio can't yet identify the source. The leaked versions are playable but incomplete — missing significant content and features planned for the official release. The studio's statement was direct:
> "We've become aware that unofficial builds of Subnautica 2 are circulating online. These are unfinished versions that are not representative of the content and gameplay we're preparing for official release. Files from unofficial sources cannot be verified for safety and stability. Some features and content within them may not function as intended."
No account suspensions, no hardware bans. Just a warning.
No ban hammer
That measured tone stands in stark contrast to Playground Games' handling of Forza Horizon 6 leaks. Microsoft issued franchise-wide hardware bans — locking players out until the year 9999 — for anyone caught running pre-release builds, as TechSpot reported. Unknown Worlds is betting that most players will simply wait for the real thing rather than risk malware from an unverified installer.
That bet seems reasonable. Subnautica 2 launches May 14 on PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store, plus Xbox Series X/S — and it's included in Game Pass from day one. For Game Pass subscribers, there's essentially zero incentive to touch a sketchy pirated build when the official version arrives within hours for no additional cost.
What you're actually getting
The official release supports four-player co-op alongside a solo option, and Unknown Worlds has confirmed no battle pass or pay-to-win mechanics. Pricing hasn't been announced for the UK or wider European markets yet. PS5 is not part of the early access launch.
With under a day between the leak confirmation and the official drop, downloading pirated files means accepting real security risks — potential malware, instability, and a build that doesn't reflect what the game actually is — for a wait measured in hours, not weeks.
