Assassin's Creed Hexe: first screenshot leaks alongside new story details
Assassin's Creed Hexe is coming into focus fast. A leaked screenshot and a wave of story details, published by leaker j0nathan, show protagonist Anika perched on a tree branch in a classic Assassin's hooded outfit — the first time fans have seen the game's visual direction. Ubisoft has not officially confirmed any of it.
The setup
Anika is a descendant of Claudia Auditore, the sister of fan-favourite Ezio from AC II and Brotherhood. The game is set in Würzburg, Germany, during the witch trials of 1625–1631 — the largest witch trials in Holy Roman Empire history, and by many accounts the deadliest in European history. Ubisoft's pitch, according to multiple leakers, is that this will be the darkest entry in the franchise. Anika is hunted as a suspected witch, giving the stealth mechanics a new layer of urgency. An updated tree-to-tree parkour system, blood pacts, and poison mechanics are all reportedly in.
Ezio himself returns — in some form. His exact role is unclear (ghost, flashback, or Isu projection are all on the table), but he's described as the "good cop" to a morally grey assassin named Wolfgang, who acts as the "bad cop." Player choices will apparently influence which mentor Anika gravitates toward, affecting the ending.
The leaked screenshot was run through AI upscaling because the original was too dark to read clearly, so the final in-game look may differ.
The concerns
Behind the scenes, things are less clean. Clint Hocking left as creative director in February 2026; Jean Guesdon — the original director of Black Flag — stepped in. A second director, Richer, departed in April 2026. Then, per Insider Gaming, around 50 developers were moved off the project to an inter-project team, with a three-month window to find a new role or face redundancy.
WCCFtech reports that the mid-development pivot also stripped out earlier "overtly supernatural" mechanics — including a cat companion — in favour of a more grounded alchemy approach. That's a significant scope change for a game already mid-production.
The target release window is June 2027, though a holiday 2027 slip is considered possible given the budget and schedule instability.
Ezio's return is the franchise's biggest nostalgia move since the 2016 Ezio Collection remaster, which is either a sign of creative confidence or a hedge against risk. After the backlash Ubisoft faced over live-service misfires, Hexe's darker, story-driven tone looks like a course correction — if it makes it out the door on schedule.
