Rockstar's GTA VI review camp: no copies, no codes, and a mandatory essay if you don't give it a 10
With GTA VI arriving November 19, 2026, Rockstar Games is reportedly taking an unusually tight grip on how the game gets reviewed — raising real questions about editorial independence in games journalism.
According to Insider Gaming, no physical discs or digital codes will be distributed to press ahead of launch. Instead, select outlets will be flown to a closed "review camp" where reviewers hand over their devices and play the game under direct Rockstar supervision. Brazilian journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe has separately confirmed the on-site-only access model.
The essay rule
The more eyebrow-raising claim comes from former IGN editor Jeremy Conrad: if a reviewer scores GTA VI below a perfect 10, Rockstar's PR team will require them to submit a detailed written justification — explaining in granular terms exactly why the game didn't earn full marks — before the review can go out.
In Conrad's own words: "Rockstar flies someone from your outlet to a 'reviewer camp' where they play the game under Rockstar supervision. At the end, the PR team asks for the score. If it's not a 10, the person is required to write an explanatory essay, explaining in the finest detail why the game doesn't deserve a 10."
Neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has officially confirmed any of these policies. The claims remain attributed to insider sources and have not been independently verified by Rockstar's PR.
Why this matters
The on-site lockdown itself isn't unprecedented — Rockstar's concern about leaks is understandable given GTA VI's scale, and the studio fired 34 employees in October 2025 over confidentiality breaches. But a mandatory pre-publication essay for any score below 10 is a different matter entirely. It places a structural burden on critics that could discourage honest, critical coverage.
GTA VI co-founder Dan Houser — who left Rockstar in 2020 — has long been vocal about disliking what he called "checklist" reviews that miss a game's holistic experience, per Fandom Wire. Whether that philosophy is now baked into Rockstar's official review policy is unclear.
What's next
Pre-orders for GTA VI are expected to open around May 18, 2026, likely alongside a third trailer. The game launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026. A PC version has not been announced.
