Gothic 1 Remake: Revolutionary Combat System Changes Revealed Ahead of June Release

Only a week remains until the release of the remake of the iconic role-playing game Gothic, and the studio Alkimia Interactive, with the support of publisher THQ Nordic, is completing an advertising campaign within which another issue of development diaries has been published. This time it's dedicated to the battle system of the updated game and its main changes compared to the original.

What's Known

Representatives of Alkimia Interactive said that they still consider the battle system of Gothic successful and did not want to radically change it. According to the developers, it is easy to master, but it is a case where effort is needed to achieve mastery.

While working on Gothic 1 Remake, the authors wanted to keep the core mechanics that allowed choosing the direction of almost every strike, although they considered abandoning this idea due to the popularity of games like Dark Souls, which have only pre-defined sets of movements. Alkimia continued experiments and it became clear that the battles could be made even more interesting while preserving the main feature. Thus, the division into two-handed and one-handed weapons disappeared, and instead, categories were introduced — swords, axes, spears, each with its own advantages, disadvantages, and features. And when choosing a specific instance, it is necessary to consider not only its characteristics but also what the enemies are armed with and what choice will be more effective at the moment.

When using each type of weapon, the protagonist improves his own mastery and learns new combos, and his progress is visually noticeable because movements that were previously awkward and jerky become smooth and precise. This applies to the bow as well, which is initially a weak weapon, but after practice and lessons from masters, the hero can master it perfectly and defeat enemies with 1-2 arrows.

The entire philosophy can be traced in the battle system of Gothic 1 Remake — the game essentially remains the same but is enriched with deep details and modern elements, making it even more interesting.

When to Expect

The release of Gothic 1 Remake will take place on June 5 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series.
