Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 — and it's already shaping up as one of the year's biggest gaming releases. It's the first Call of Duty on Nintendo hardware since the Wii U in 2013, with Digital Legends handling the Switch 2 port and claiming seamless performance. One thing it won't have at launch: Xbox Game Pass access. Microsoft confirmed an April 2026 policy shift that excludes MW4 from day-one subscription, a direct reversal of the Black Ops 6 and 7 strategy, per GameSpot. Players will need to buy it outright, with a wait of at least a year before it hits the service.

The story

Infinity Ward is centering the campaign on Private Park, a South Korean soldier played by Young Mazino — best known for Beef and The Last of Us — who begins as a rookie and grows through the chaos of a fictional North-South Korean conflict. Much of the action is set in Hadzin, Park's hometown, with additional missions spanning New York, Paris, and Mumbai. A parallel thread follows Captain Price, reprised by Barry Sloane, operating outside the chain of command on a personal vendetta against old enemies. The character takes a noticeably darker turn than in previous entries.

The choice of a modern Korean War scenario carries real-world weight. South Korean journalist Hyeonju Song cautioned that "creating fiction based on it is bound to cause pain to someone," according to Wikipedia's MW4 development coverage). Infinity Ward says it consulted Korean cultural specialists, staff members, and defectors to avoid Hollywood clichés — a more deliberate approach than the series has historically taken.

The multiplayer

Multiplayer launches with 12 core 6v6 maps. A new Kill Block mode ships with more than 500 configurations, and the DMZ extraction mode returns after its absence in recent entries. The new Ballistic Authority gunplay system adjusts weapon handling across game modes. Preorders opened globally on May 28, with a Vault Edition that includes a 10% loyalty discount for owners of previous CoD titles.

MW4's October 23 date puts it 27 days ahead of GTA 6 (November 19), giving Activision a clear window to capture attention — and full-price purchases — before the year's other megaton release lands.
