Fable returns February 2027 with Hayley Atwell as the villain — and a surprise Jack of Blades tease

Fable has a release date: February 23, 2027, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Playground Games and Xbox confirmed the launch window alongside a new trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase, and the game will be available on Game Pass from day one. Pre-orders are open now across all platforms.

The cast

The trailer's main job is to introduce Isabel, the game's central villain — and she's played by Hayley Atwell, best known as Peggy Carter in the MCU and as a recurring lead in the Mission: Impossible series. Isabel declares herself the one true hero of Albion and dismisses everyone else as unworthy, which is about as strong a villain opening as you can ask for. Atwell joins a wider all-British ensemble that includes Matt King, Richard Ayoade, and Natasia Demetriou, per the Xbox Wire cast reveal.

Jack of Blades is back

The trailer saves its biggest moment for last: a brief glimpse of Jack of Blades, the masked antagonist who headlined the original 2004 Fable. It's his first mainline appearance since Fable II, and Kotaku notes the tease is short enough that his exact role — lead villain, supporting threat, or something else entirely — remains unclear. For anyone who put serious hours into the original, seeing him resurface is a pointed nod.

What the game actually is

Playground is firm on one distinction: Fable is a fairytale, not a fantasy epic. That means no dense political intrigue or multi-layered lore dumps. Instead, the studio is promising an open world where you can go anywhere in Albion from the start — no level-gating — backed by a deep reputation system that shapes how the world responds to your choices.

Pricing sits at $69.99 for the standard edition and $99.99 for the Premium Edition, which adds five days of early access, per GamesRadar. EU pricing has not been announced yet. Game Pass inclusion makes this Microsoft's clearest argument yet for the subscription against a crowded early-2027 release slate — though how large a role Jack of Blades actually plays will be one of the more watched reveals between now and launch.
