Jason Momoa drops out of Sony's Helldivers movie
Sony's big-screen adaptation of Helldivers has lost its star. Jason Momoa has exited the film, per Deadline, leaving the production without a lead actor less than 18 months before its scheduled November 10, 2027 release. Helldivers 2 sold more than 12 million units in its first four months — it's PlayStation's fastest-selling franchise — so commercial pressure on the film is significant.
The exit
No official reason has been given for Momoa's departure. Sony and Momoa's camp have both stayed silent. The leading speculation points to a scheduling conflict with A Minecraft Movie Squared, the sequel to this year's blockbuster in which Momoa also stars, but that remains unconfirmed.
What makes the exit notable is the timing. As recently as April 2026 at CinemaCon, director Justin Lin — the Fast & Furious veteran behind the camera here — described Momoa as the "only person" who could pull off the role. That public praise, followed two months later by a quiet departure, raises obvious questions about what changed.
The film itself
Lin has said openly that he is not a gamer and does not plan to stay close to the source material. His stated goal is a film built around human relationships rather than the game's satirical tone. That's a notable creative choice: Helldivers 2 is a sharp, politically pointed satire about militarism and manufactured democracy, and that edge is central to why the game resonated with players. Whether a more grounded, drama-leaning approach serves the adaptation is an open question — and one that now has to be answered with a new lead actor.
The script comes from Gary Dauberman, who wrote the It films, Annabelle, The Nun, and last year's Until Dawn adaptation.
What happens next
Sony says the project remains on track for its November 2027 date, according to Variety. Replacement casting at this stage is possible — 18 months is a workable window — but any significant delay would push the film into a crowded 2028 release calendar. Sony's PlayStation Productions has form here: Uncharted made $407 million worldwide in 2022, demonstrating real appetite for game adaptations when the casting lands right. Getting that casting right, quickly, is now the production's most urgent task.
