SAND: Raiders of Sophie delayed again — now an Early Access game

An extraction shooter developed in Ukraine just dodged what its own studio called a "catastrophic launch." SAND: Raiders of Sophie was set to go live on June 10 — announced with fanfare at Summer Game Fest — but a mandatory server stress test one day before release exposed problems serious enough to delay the game a second time and flip its launch format entirely.

The stress test that saved it

The "Server Slam" pre-launch test revealed that SAND's backend couldn't handle the player counts the developers had publicly promised per match. More than half of testers hit connectivity issues. Studio Hologryph and publisher tinyBuild pulled the release date the same day and issued a frank statement:

> "Server Slam helped us discover critical issues that were not visible during previous online tests, which essentially saved us from a catastrophic launch. We can fix these critical issues, but we need a little more time."

The new date is June 22, 2026, on Steam — but no longer as a full 1.0 release. SAND is now launching into Early Access, a format the team had explicitly ruled out earlier this year. A development roadmap, shaped partly by community feedback, will go live on launch day. The Early Access period is expected to last roughly a year.

What the game actually is

SAND is a multiplayer dieselpunk extraction shooter set on a desert planet called Sophie. The lore pulls from real history: in the game's fiction, the Austro-Hungarian Empire colonized other worlds, and settlers from Galicia — the region straddling modern western Ukraine and Poland — were sent to Sophie after an ecological disaster struck the planet. Characters and culture draw directly from that heritage; Hologryph is based in Lviv, TowerHaus (co-developer) in Kyiv, and both studios have been working on the game throughout the war in Ukraine.

Gameplay-wise, the closest comparison is Sea of Thieves: teams pilot large walking machines called Tramplers across the desert, fight rival crews for resources, and use early-20th-century-style firearms. One Trampler can be crewed solo or by a small squad.

What comes next

This is SAND's third delay — it slipped from a March window before landing on June 10, and now June 22. Server stability failures have become a recurring story in 2026 multiplayer launches, and the decision to go transparent rather than ship broken is increasingly the safer call. Whether Early Access delivers on the roadmap will determine if SAND builds a lasting audience or quietly fades — a risk every live-service shooter takes on day one.
