BYD Dolphin G: a £20,000 plug-in hybrid with 1,000 km range takes on Europe's compact car market

BYD has launched the Dolphin G DM-i in Europe — a plug-in hybrid hatchback starting at £20,000 in the UK and €25,200 in Spain that undercuts every comparable PHEV in its class by a significant margin. The car combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined range of 1,040 km, meaning drivers can cover a week of mixed commuting and weekend driving without a second thought about charging or refuelling. At this price point, nothing from Volkswagen, Toyota, or Ford comes close.

What it is

The Dolphin G is the first BYD model designed specifically for European buyers, rather than adapted from a China-market car. It sits between a supermini and a small family hatch — 4,160 mm long, with a 425-litre boot that expands to 1,225 litres. Flush door handles and smooth LED lighting give it a restrained look that avoids the flashier styling of earlier BYD models.

Two powertrains are available. The base version produces 175 hp paired with a 7.4 kWh battery, giving 40 km of pure electric range. The upper trim steps up to 212 hp with an 18 kWh battery and 105 km of EV range — enough to cover most UK daily commutes on electricity alone. Both versions hit 0–100 km/h in 8.3 seconds. Claimed weighted fuel consumption is 1.4 L/100 km, with CO₂ emissions of 32–60 g/km.

Inside, the cabin follows the current minimal-button playbook: an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a central touchscreen of either 10.1 or 12.8 inches depending on trim. Higher specs add a panoramic roof, a head-up display, and a 360-degree camera. Adaptive cruise control and a full suite of safety assists are standard across the range.

The price gap

The Dolphin G's starting price of £20,000 makes it roughly half the cost of the VW Golf GTE (£38,000+) and well below the Ford Kuga PHEV and Toyota Corolla PHEV — none of which match its 1,040 km total range, per AutoEvolution. BYD's DM-i system prioritises the electric motor for everyday driving, using the petrol engine mainly as a range extender — a setup closer to a series hybrid than a traditional PHEV.

EU tariffs of 17% apply to Chinese battery-electric vehicles but not to PHEVs, which partly explains BYD's push into hybrid territory. The Dolphin G will also be produced at BYD's Hungarian plant in Szeged, keeping it tariff-free across EU markets. Chinese PHEV imports to Europe surged 892% in January–February 2025 as the industry shifted strategy, reports EV Magazine.

What to expect

UK pre-orders are open now, with first deliveries expected in summer 2026. BYD is expanding its dealer network across 15-plus European countries, though service and warranty infrastructure remains thinner than established brands. Independent real-world efficiency testing hasn't been published yet — WLTP figures for PHEVs often flatter the car — so the 1.4 L/100 km claim is worth treating as a best-case number until third-party results arrive.
