Tenda AX12: A $22 Wi-Fi 6 Router That's Mostly a China Story
Chinese networking brand Tenda has launched the AX12, a vertical Wi-Fi 6 router priced at 159 yuan — roughly $22 — making it one of the cheapest 802.11ax routers announced this year. The router supports 160 MHz channel bandwidth and claims a combined throughput of 2,976 Mbps across both bands. For anyone paying $60–80 for a budget Wi-Fi 6 router in the US or UK, that price tag stings a little.
The hardware
The AX12 uses a vertical tower design with large passive vents, relying on natural convection rather than a fan to keep temperatures in check. Inside sits a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor — Tenda claims it delivers 20% more processing headroom than comparable budget routers, though no independent benchmarks back that up yet. Four gigabit auto-sensing ports line the back panel, and four external antennas handle the radio work: the 5 GHz pair reaches 7 dBi gain, up from the 5 dBi typical of budget-tier antennas. Two external FEM (front-end module) signal amplifiers are also onboard, meant to push signal through walls more reliably.
The spec breakdown: 5 GHz tops out at 2,402 Mbps, and 2.4 GHz adds 574 Mbps, for the headline 2,976 Mbps figure. That's theoretical maximum under ideal conditions, not a real-world guarantee.
Tenda markets the AX12 as "Wi-Fi 6+" — a label that technically refers to 160 MHz support on the IEEE 802.11ax standard. The practical speed gain only materialises if your phone or laptop also supports 160 MHz, which many mid-range devices still don't.
The catch for US and UK buyers
The AX12 is listed on Alibaba and AliExpress but is not stocked at Currys, Amazon UK, Best Buy, or any major Western retailer. There is no confirmed US or UK pricing, no documented warranty structure, and no official support channel outside China. Importing directly from Chinese distributors adds customs duties and leaves buyers with limited recourse if something goes wrong.

The broader competitive picture makes the AX12's case harder to argue. The TP-Link Archer AX55 is the established budget Wi-Fi 6 benchmark in the UK, available at major retailers with a clear warranty. According to the RTINGS 2026 budget router roundup, it remains the go-to recommendation for most homes. At the higher end, Wi-Fi 7 routers — like the TP-Link Archer BE3600 — are now available below $100, further squeezing the case for importing an unverified Wi-Fi 6 model.
Worth watching, not buying yet
The Tenda AX12 spec sheet checks real boxes: 160 MHz support, decent antenna gain, passive cooling, and a price that undercuts everything in its class. If Tenda pushes the AX12 into Western distribution with proper pricing and warranty support, it would be worth a serious look. Right now, it's a compelling router for the Chinese market — and a frustrating footnote for everyone else.
