PS6 still on track for 2027, says insider — despite delay fears

PlayStation 6 is still coming in 2027, according to well-known leaker KeplerL2 — and the competitive pressure from Valve and Microsoft may leave Sony with no real choice anyway. Earlier this year, Embracer Group's financial report floated the idea that PS6 could slip to 2028 or even 2029, citing a memory-market crisis that has pushed RAM prices up more than fourfold. KeplerL2 shot that down with a single word: "No."

The case for 2027

The leaker's confidence isn't just gut instinct. KeplerL2 endorsed a detailed breakdown arguing that Sony locked in a strategic manufacturing deal with TSMC for the PS6's APU long ago, and stockpiled GDDR7 memory well in advance of the current shortage. Hundreds of millions of dollars have already been invested in development, and PS5 sales are visibly declining — both strong incentives to ship sooner rather than later.

There's also a market-timing argument. No analyst can reliably predict what the component landscape looks like past 2027, so waiting for a "better" window carries its own risks. Sony's internal hardware development is reportedly largely complete, aligning with documents from the UK's CMA review of the Activision deal that suggested Sony had no plans for a new console before 2027 — making 2027 the earliest realistic window.

The competition won't wait

The competitive picture makes a delay even costlier. Valve has opened pre-orders for its Steam Machine, now confirmed for the first half of 2026 after a RAM-related delay from 2025. Microsoft's next-generation console, Xbox Project Helix, is targeting late 2027 — potentially landing before or alongside PS6. Ceding the holiday season to a new Xbox would be a significant strategic blow.

UK pricing expectations based on the PS5 pattern point to £400–£500, though that depends heavily on whether GDDR7 costs stabilise by late 2026. Backward compatibility with PS5 and PS4 titles has been confirmed in separate leaks, which should ease the upgrade decision for existing PlayStation owners.

One caveat: KeplerL2 is an insider with a solid but imperfect track record, per Vice. Sony has made no official statement on PS6's release window, specs, or price. Until then, 2027 remains the best-supported estimate — not a guarantee.
