Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 drops first teaser with a brand-new crew
Netflix and Studio Trigger have dropped the first teaser for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, confirming a Fall 2026 release window for the follow-up to the anime that quietly rescued Cyberpunk 2077's reputation back in 2022. The new season runs 10 episodes and arrives on Netflix as a completely standalone story — no David Martinez, no direct continuation of Season 1's tragic arc.
A new crew in Night City
Four new protagonists take center stage. Weak Kingsley is a veteran edgerunner once known as "The King." D is a netrunner from the nomadic Snake Nation clan, hunting down the people who killed his crew. Roman Carax is an anti-braindance filmmaker who wants to document Night City's stories the old-fashioned way. Talia Yang is a corporate insider with a taste for chrome and violence. The season's stated themes are redemption and revenge — fitting territory for Night City.
The creative team carries serious weight. Bartosz Sztybor, a Polish writer and Hugo Award winner who serves as VP of Franchise at CD Projekt Red, returns as showrunner and writer. Masahiko Otsuka handles the screenplay. Ichigo Kanno, whose character design defined the look of Season 1, is back.
The director and the stakes
Behind the camera is Kai Ikarashi, making his full-series directorial debut. Ikarashi worked as an animator on Little Witch Academia and contributed animation direction to Evangelion 3.0+1.01 and Mob Psycho 100 before directing a standout episode in Edgerunners Season 1 — that episode's reception earned him the promotion to lead the whole second season. The visual ambition he brings should feel familiar to fans of Trigger's distinctive style.
Season 1 arrived at a moment when Cyberpunk 2077 was still clawing back goodwill after its disastrous 2020 launch. The anime didn't just perform well — it sent players back to the game in numbers large enough to shift the cultural conversation entirely. Season 2 arrives with that goodwill intact but with the pressure of franchise fatigue setting in across 2026's packed slate of game adaptations.
What's coming next
The teaser dropped June 29, per What's on Netflix. A dedicated panel at Anime Expo LA on July 4 is expected to reveal more — likely a firmer release date and possibly voice cast details. As Gagadget notes, the 10-episode standalone format keeps the door open for further seasons without the weight of ongoing continuity. No regional streaming differences have been announced; the standard Netflix global rollout is expected.
