State of Decay 3 looks great — if the studio making it survives

State of Decay 3 just got its most detailed gameplay showcase yet — nearly two hours of alpha footage released by blogger Brian Menard. The catch: the 110-person studio behind the game, Undead Labs, is reportedly on the block as part of Microsoft's broader Xbox restructuring, with closure as the fallback if no buyer is found, per Gaming Bible.

The game itself

Menard's latest video, a follow-up to an earlier 72-minute clip, digs into crafting, base construction, gear upgrades, and vehicle handling — all from a closed alpha he attended. The most notable detail for co-op players: multiplayer now runs on dedicated servers rather than peer-to-peer connections. That means up to four players can split off, explore independently, and rejoin later without losing progress — no more waiting for a host to stay online.

The setting has shifted, too. State of Decay 3 takes place years after the zombie apocalypse began, so survivors are no longer panicked newcomers. They've organized, built communities, and learned to fight back. That maturity shows in the systems: players can manage up to three simultaneous settlements with as many as 36 survivors across them. The map is roughly four times the size of the largest State of Decay 2 map, according to creative director Kevin Patzelt.

The studio problem

The game was first announced in 2020, spent years in development limbo, and only recently secured a 2027 release window on Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and PC. The PS5 inclusion is itself new territory — this will be the first State of Decay on a Sony console, reflecting Microsoft's wider multiplatform push.

But the timing is uncomfortable. The Gamer reports that the gameplay reveal may partly serve as a pitch to attract outside investors, similar to how Ninja Theory showcased Hellblade II content during its own uncertain period. Microsoft has not publicly commented on Undead Labs' status as of late June 2026.

What to watch

If the studio finds a buyer, State of Decay 3 continues toward its 2027 target. If it doesn't, the game's future gets murky fast. For now, the alpha footage suggests something genuinely promising — deep systems, a big world, and co-op that actually works without someone babysitting a lobby. Whether it reaches players is the open question.
