Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 may be the last of its kind
If you've been considering a Samsung flip phone, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 may be your last chance to buy one new. Insider account Fireuniverse claims the Flip 8 — set to be unveiled at a London Unpacked event on July 22 — could be the final entry in Samsung's clamshell line. Two earlier sources, including the well-regarded leaker Instant Digital, made similar claims, giving the rumor more weight than a single anonymous post would carry.
Samsung has not confirmed or denied any plans to discontinue the Flip series.
The pressure behind the rumor
Three factors appear to be pushing Samsung toward an exit. Component costs are rising sharply — DRAM shortages have pushed the Flip 8's expected starting price to somewhere between $1,099 and $1,200, up from the Flip 7's launch price. At that level, the clamshell format faces a tougher sell against Samsung's own book-style foldables.
The competitive picture isn't helping either. Motorola's Razr line now holds around 50% of the US flip market, per SamMobile. Apple's first foldable iPhone is expected later in 2026, likely priced above $2,400, which will redefine what "premium foldable" means for the whole market. Supply-chain chatter tracked by Notebookcheck found no early roadmap activity for a Flip 9 — an absence that stands out given how far in advance Samsung typically plans hardware generations.

What Samsung might do instead
The company appears to be betting on two form factors going forward. A wider book-style device — currently referred to as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide — is reportedly in development and would offer a larger screen than the standard Fold. Further out, WCCFtech reports that Samsung is actively working on a rollable phone — the Galaxy Z Roll — targeting a 2028 launch. The pattern echoes how Samsung handled the Galaxy Note: quietly phased out as its features were absorbed elsewhere.
For anyone already interested in the Flip 8, pre-orders open on July 22 with retail availability expected around August 5 at Best Buy, Amazon, and carriers. Trade-in deals for the Flip 7 are likely to be prominent at launch. Whether this is the last chance to buy a Samsung clamshell or just another rumor cycle, that pricing alone makes the Flip 8 a harder impulse buy than its predecessors.
