Sony is shutting down the PS3 and Vita stores — here's when access ends

Sony is closing the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita, with US and UK players losing access in July 2027. The shutdown lands on the same day Sony announced it will stop producing physical game discs entirely starting January 2028 — meaning two of the last fallbacks for owning your games are disappearing at once.

What's actually happening

According to the Official PlayStation Blog, the closure rolls out in stages. Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua lose the PS3 Store first, in August 2026. Latin America and the Middle East follow by the end of 2026. For everyone else — including the US and UK — both the PS3 Store and the PS Vita Store shut down in July 2027.

Sony's stated reason is that the aging consoles are increasingly incompatible with modern payment processing standards, and active player numbers on both platforms have steadily declined. The company also frames it as a resource reallocation: "We are moving forward and expanding PlayStation's capabilities on new devices, where the majority of our players are today."

Purchased content is not deleted. Sony says players will retain the ability to re-download titles they already own "for the foreseeable future" — though that phrase carries no legal definition or time guarantee.

The bigger picture

This isn't Sony's first attempt. The company announced the same closures in April 2021, then reversed course after significant player backlash, as GamesRadar noted. This time there's been no reversal.

The timing matters for game preservation. Hundreds of PS3 and Vita titles were released exclusively in digital form — once the store closes, those games become impossible to purchase legitimately. Combined with the end of disc production in 2028, Sony is betting entirely on its current digital storefront. That's fine as long as the PS5-era Store stays live, but there's no mechanism that guarantees it will.

What to do now

If you still play on PS3 or Vita, or plan to revisit either console, the window to buy games you don't already own closes in July 2027. Download your purchased library before then — Sony's "foreseeable future" retention pledge is not a permanent guarantee, and the company has form for changing its mind on legacy platform support.
