NASA contracts Firefly Aerospace to build the heat shield for its 2028 Mars helicopter mission

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has awarded a $13 million subcontract to Texas-based Firefly Aerospace to build the aeroshell — the combined heat shield and backshell — that will protect the SkyFall spacecraft during its fiery entry into the Martian atmosphere. The deal, confirmed in a Firefly Aerospace press release on July 7, 2026, targets a December 2028 launch. For anyone tracking NASA's Mars ambitions, SkyFall represents a genuine shift in how the agency plans to explore — and eventually land humans on — the Red Planet.

Three helicopters, no landing legs

SkyFall's core concept is a departure from conventional Mars missions. Instead of delivering a lander or rover to the surface inside a protective capsule, the spacecraft will release three next-generation helicopters mid-descent. The rotorcraft separate from the entry vehicle while it is still falling through the thin Martian air, then immediately begin powered flight on their own.

The helicopters are descended from Ingenuity, the small NASA drone that completed 72 flights on Mars between 2021 and 2024. The new designs are significantly more capable: NASA JPL rotor testing (May 2026) pushed rotor tip speeds past Mach 1.08, confirming a 30% improvement in lift. That extra lifting power makes it feasible to carry the science instruments needed for the mission's primary objective — detecting subsurface water ice and mapping terrain for future crewed landing sites.

Firefly's Gloworks lab does the work

The aeroshell will be designed at Firefly's Gloworks innovation lab and then manufactured and tested at the company's Rocket Ranch facility in Briggs, Texas, before being shipped to JPL for integration with the spacecraft. Firefly has drawn on composite manufacturing techniques already proven during its Blue Ghost lunar lander program.

This is Firefly's first major planetary-mission subcontract from NASA, and it illustrates a broader trend: JPL is increasingly distributing work among smaller, specialized US contractors rather than relying solely on traditional aerospace primes.

What SkyFall is actually for

The mission's science goals are directly tied to human exploration planning. The three helicopters will use onboard instruments to map subsurface resources — particularly water ice deposits — and assess candidate landing zones for astronauts. That data has practical value: knowing where ice is, and whether terrain is navigable, feeds directly into decisions about where a crewed Mars mission would touch down.

SkyFall also removes a cost driver. By eliminating the need for a dedicated surface lander to deploy the helicopters, NASA cuts hardware complexity and shortens the overall mission timeline — factors that matter as SpaceX continues to develop Starship with its own Mars ambitions.

The December 2028 launch window gives the program roughly two and a half years. The aeroshell is a long-lead item — one of the first hardware elements that has to be right before anything else can proceed.
