Subnautica 2 hits 5 million copies, drops its first big update
Subnautica 2 has sold 5 million copies in under two months — less than eight weeks after its Early Access launch on May 14. Unknown Worlds followed that milestone by shipping Adaptive Measures (v1.1) on July 8, the game's first substantial update since release. If you've been waiting to see whether the studio can keep pace with player feedback, this patch is a solid early answer.
The stun mechanic
The biggest design change is the Sonic Resonator, a new tool that temporarily stuns aggressive creatures. Subnautica has always been a non-violent game — you can't kill anything — and that's not changing. But the previous lack of any defensive option frustrated players in tougher encounters. The stun mechanic threads the needle: it gives you an out without turning the ocean into a hunting ground.
Creature behavior has been tuned more broadly, too. Fauna now only retaliate for a limited time after a Survival Multitool hit before retreating properly. Schooling fish move more naturally, and the Moray Parasite is now guaranteed to be the first threatening creature new players encounter — a sequencing fix that should smooth out the early-game difficulty curve.
More Biomods, better bases
Two new Biolabs open up in the Coral Gardens and Axum Ruins biomes, raising the total unlockable Biomod cap from 4 to 6. Extra passive Biomod slots now unlock by scanning creatures with the Bioscanner — the UI clearly shows how many scans are needed per slot. Creative mode skips all of that and unlocks everything immediately.
Base building gets several quality-of-life improvements: larger objects can now be deconstructed, the Transport Bay platform footprint is smaller, and the Fabricator and Transport Bay can be placed in tighter rooms near hatches. Build outlines also render more clearly near the water surface and behind other structures.
On the quality-of-life side, a FOV slider has finally been added to settings — one of the most-requested community asks. Players can now sprint on land and inside bases (reassignable key), though base walking speed has been reduced to compensate. A save-file bug that wiped unlocked Biomods is also fixed.
What's next
The next patch, v1.2, is expected within a few weeks and focuses on co-op: player revival and built-in proximity voice chat are both coming. Longer term, Unknown Worlds has confirmed a v2.0 update that will add a new region, new creatures, and story content — though no release window has been given.
Subnautica 2 is available on PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store, and on Xbox Series X|S. It's included in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass from day one.
