Capcom is replacing Resident Evil spin-offs with big story DLCs

Capcom is quietly restructuring how it fills the gaps between major Resident Evil games — and spin-offs like Revelations and Outbreak are apparently not part of that plan anymore. According to leaker Dusk Golem, the company is shifting toward large story expansions instead of standalone side games, with the first example already in the works for Resident Evil Requiem. If accurate, it marks a significant change to a franchise that has historically used spin-offs to experiment with new ideas.

The new plan

Dusk Golem — a well-sourced leaker on all things Resident Evil — says Capcom ran into production difficulties making traditional side games under the RE Engine, the in-house technology that powers every entry since Resident Evil 7. Rather than continue trying to build lower-budget spinoffs, the company has reportedly decided to invest that effort into substantial DLC campaigns attached to mainline titles.

The Requiem expansion is described as comparable in scope to Separate Ways (the add-on for the Resident Evil 4 remake) and Shadows of Rose (the Village expansion) — roughly 5 to 6 hours of new story content. That puts it well above typical paid DLC and closer to a short standalone episode.

After Veronica

The Requiem DLC won't arrive until after Resident Evil Veronica ships. Capcom has confirmed the Veronica remake for a 2027 release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC, and it's currently the studio's top priority. Dusk Golem also notes that Veronica is meant to tie into Requiem's story, which is an unusual move given the original Code: Veronica came out in 2000.

In a separate post, Dusk Golem said that a remake of the original Resident Evil 1 moved into pre-production around August or September 2025, with full development not expected to begin until after Veronica is finished — putting any RE1 remake well beyond 2027.

None of this has been officially confirmed by Capcom. Dusk Golem has a strong track record on RE leaks, but the DLC scope, timeline, and strategy shift remain rumour until the company says otherwise. No pricing has been announced for the Requiem expansion.
