Sony's FlexStrike fight stick delayed indefinitely, missing Marvel Tōkon launch

Sony's first self-designed arcade fight stick, the FlexStrike, has been pushed back from its August 6 launch date with no replacement date announced. The controller was built to coincide with the release of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, meaning the game now arrives without its dedicated peripheral. At £179.99 in the UK and $199.99 in the US, this is a significant piece of hardware to leave in limbo.

The delay

Sony cited "unexpected production delays" in a statement posted to PlayStation.Blog (Official Delay), saying it needs extra time for "finishing touches" to deliver the "best possible experience." No technical specifics were shared — no mention of supply chain issues, component shortages, or quality failures. A further update was promised "soon," though no deadline was attached to that promise either.

Pre-orders opened on June 12 across direct.playstation.com, Amazon UK, Currys, and GameStop. Those orders are now in an open-ended hold. Sony advises anyone who pre-ordered directly through PlayStation to wait for a status update. Buyers who went through a retailer are told to monitor that retailer's communications and contact them directly with questions.

The stakes

The FlexStrike is designed to connect wirelessly to PS5 and PC via PlayStation Link software. Its layout draws on classic arcade stick controls — the kind that defined the fighting game genre — updated with a touchpad and DualSense-style buttons. It was positioned as Sony's day-one answer for Marvel Tōkon players who want a proper arcade experience from launch.

That window has now closed. Marvel Tōkon releases August 6 on schedule, and fight stick buyers will either wait an unknown amount of time for FlexStrike or look elsewhere. The market isn't short on alternatives: Victrix Pro FS, Hori CommandBox, and Qanba are all shipping now. As Push Square notes, an indefinite delay hands those competitors a meaningful window to capture buyers who don't want to wait.

One piece of good news: the 27-inch PlayStation-branded gaming monitor is still on track for its August 27 release. That launch, at least, remains intact — though it's US and Japan only, with no EU date confirmed.

Sony's hardware credibility has been under scrutiny since the announced discontinuation of PlayStation disc support in 2028. A stumble on its first purpose-built arcade peripheral doesn't help that narrative. For now, keep an eye on your retailer's inbox — and your right to cancel if the wait runs too long.
