ZTE G5 Max: An Outdoor 5G Router Built to Handle Almost Anything
If your broadband still relies on a promise that fiber is "coming soon," ZTE's new G5 Max is worth a look. This outdoor 5G fixed wireless router uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon X75 modem — one of the first deployments of that chip in a router-class device outside the US — and is designed to mount on a wall or rooftop where 5G signals are actually strong, not buried behind thick concrete walls.
The hardware
The X75 is the first modem built around the 5G Advanced standard (3GPP Release 17), which means better carrier aggregation, broader band support including n79, and more reliable connections in fringe coverage areas. ZTE pairs it with 13 dBi high-gain antennas and 4×4 MIMO to pull in a usable signal where a phone might show one bar or none. Real-world 5G download speeds are quoted at up to 4.29 Gbps, though typical figures will depend heavily on your carrier and location.
On the local network side, the G5 Max supports Wi-Fi 6 with capacity for up to 64 simultaneous connected devices — enough for a small office, a café, or a home loaded with smart gadgets. Per LowcostMobile UK, the model number is MC7510 and the spec sheet lists Wi-Fi 6, not Wi-Fi 7 as some listings suggest.
PoE, IP65, and extreme temperatures
The standout practical feature is the 2.5GbE port with Power over Ethernet (PoE) support. PoE lets the router receive both data and power through a single Ethernet cable, so there's no need to run a separate power outlet to your roof or exterior wall — just one cable from an indoor PoE injector or switch.
The IP65 rating means it's fully dust-tight and protected against water jets, suitable for permanent outdoor installation in most UK and US climates. The operating range runs from -40°C to +55°C, so it handles both harsh winters and summer heat without issue.
SIM options cover both a physical nano-SIM (4FF) and eSIM. The companion ZTE Smart Life app handles setup, parental controls, traffic prioritization, and VPN configuration via L2TP and PPTP.
Availability and price
The G5 Max launched in China at 2,499 yuan (roughly $350). In Germany it's already on sale at €299–€361 via retailers tracked by Geizhals Deutschland. In the UK, it's available through third-party resellers like LowcostMobile at around £352, which includes a 24-month warranty and PoE bundle — but no official launch with BT, Vodafone, or Three has been announced. US buyers face a similar picture: the X75 arrived in mobile hotspots in 2024 and router-class adoption is still catching up, per RV Mobile Internet.
For anyone in a rural area where fixed-line broadband is slow or unavailable, the G5 Max is a capable alternative to Starlink or T-Mobile Home Internet — provided your 5G signal outdoors is solid enough to make it worthwhile.
