iPad mini is getting an OLED screen this fall — and a higher price tag

Apple is bringing an OLED display to the iPad mini this October, according to Bloomberg Mark Gurman — the most credible source on Apple's product roadmap. The current iPad mini starts at $499, but the OLED upgrade is expected to push that price to $599–$699. That makes it a harder sell for budget-conscious buyers, and puts it in direct competition with the iPad Air.

The upgrade

The new iPad mini moves from a 8.3-inch LCD to an 8.4-inch OLED panel. You get deeper blacks and better contrast — the visual difference over LCD is immediately noticeable. The refresh rate stays at 60Hz, so there's no ProMotion (Apple's smoother 120Hz scrolling found on the iPad Pro). That's a deliberate cost-control decision, per Notebookcheck, keeping the mini from cannibalizing the Pro lineup.

The redesign also adds water resistance for the first time — a meaningful durability upgrade for a tablet people often carry in bags without cases. An updated speaker system is included too. Bloomberg describes this as the biggest iPad mini redesign in five years.

The price and the competition

Apple raised prices across its iPad lineup in June 2026 by $50–$200 per model, citing a memory component shortage. The OLED mini arrives on top of those increases. In the UK, the current model starts at £489; the new version is likely to land above £599, narrowing the gap with the iPad Air at £749.

If you're waiting for an iPad Air with OLED, that's a 2027 story. Bloomberg confirms the next iPad Air — arriving spring 2027 in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes — will get OLED then, not now. A refreshed iPad Pro and a base iPad update are also planned for early 2027.

The accessory angle

One detail worth flagging: both the Apple Pencil USB-C and Apple Pencil Pro are being redesigned for spring 2027 with replaceable batteries. The EU's Batteries Regulation (Article 11), which takes effect in February 2027, requires user-replaceable batteries in small electronics — Apple has no choice but to comply. The engineering approach hasn't been detailed yet.

The iPad mini OLED is expected to launch in October 2026 alongside Apple's fall event, which will also feature the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and reportedly the first foldable iPhone. No pre-order window has been confirmed. In the US and UK, it will be available through Apple's own stores and major retailers.
