NASA ditches its 40-year-old relay satellites to stream Artemis III in 4K via Starlink
NASA will mount two SpaceX Starlink Mini terminals on its Orion spacecraft for the Artemis III mission, targeted for late 2027. The terminals use laser crosslinks — not radio — to pipe live 4K video of ship-to-ship docking back to Mission Control at Johnson Space Center in Houston. It marks the formal end of NASA's four-decade dependence on its own government-owned Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS) for crewed spaceflight.
The hardware
Starlink Mini terminals tap into the same laser mesh already running inside the Starlink constellation. SpaceX currently operates more than 25,000 active laser crosslinks in orbit, per the NASA official announcement. The company proved the concept during Starship test flights, streaming high-definition video even through the dense plasma of atmospheric reentry. Where Artemis II used a custom O2O (Orion-to-ground) radio system limited by line-of-sight, Artemis III's Starlink mesh relays data through the constellation without that constraint.
Why this mission needs it
Artemis III is now a low-Earth-orbit docking rehearsal — NASA redesigned the mission in early 2026 to validate commercial relay technology before committing it to a lunar approach. A crew of four will practice rendezvous and docking with lunar landing modules. Real-time 4K feeds aren't a social-media bonus; flight controllers need continuous high-quality imagery to monitor complex maneuvering. The actual crewed Moon landing has moved to Artemis IV, currently scheduled for 2028, and its success depends on what Artemis III proves.
The bigger picture
This is part of NASA's Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program, which is steering the agency toward commercial relay infrastructure for future Moon and Mars operations. The shift cost the government roughly $278.5 million in commercial relay contracts, reports TechTimes. SpaceX's dual role — as both a NASA contractor and the operator of the relay network itself — is drawing scrutiny from lawmakers and the FTC, who are examining whether that arrangement creates monopoly risk for future cislunar commerce. Competitors including Blue Origin, ULA, and Amazon's Kuiper are watching SpaceX consolidate its position on NASA's most visible crewed missions while its constellation scales further.
