Pratt & Whitney's hybrid jet engine passes ground tests — first flight in 2027

Pratt & Whitney Canada has completed ground testing of a hybrid-electric propulsion system aimed at cutting fuel use on short regional flights by 30%. The company announced the milestone on July 21 at the Farnborough Airshow. The system will fly on a modified De Havilland Dash 8-100 — the first flight is planned for 2027.

How it works

The setup pairs a conventional turboprop engine with a 1-megawatt electric motor built by Collins Aerospace. Power comes from a 200kWh battery pack supplied by Swiss firm H55 — a company backed by RTX Ventures.

The split is deliberate. The electric motor handles the phases that burn the most fuel in a conventional aircraft: ground taxi, takeoff, and the initial climb. Once the plane levels out into cruise, the turboprop takes over, running in its most efficient range. Engineers calculate the combination reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by roughly a third on a typical 250-nautical-mile (463km) route — the kind of hop that connects Boston to New York or London to Edinburgh.

Safety and design

High-voltage aircraft systems need careful handling. The battery modules are housed in fire-resistant containers with dedicated thermal management. If something goes wrong, the system is designed to vent gases safely and isolate any damaged section before it affects the rest of the aircraft.

The race

Pratt & Whitney is not alone. GE Aerospace, working with NASA, Boeing, and Beta Technologies under NASA's Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration (EPFD) program, already flew its own hybrid system on a Saab 340B above 30,000 feet in May 2026 — a world altitude record for this class of aircraft, per the GE Aerospace press release. That puts P&W; at least 12 months behind its main US rival on actual flight experience.

On the startup side, French firm Aura Aero — which has raised €340 million — is also targeting a 2027 first flight for its ERA regional hybrid aircraft, adding a third competitor to a field that is moving quickly from lab to runway.

What comes next

No airline has committed to buying the system yet, and no certification timeline — whether FAA or EASA — has been disclosed. Commercial service realistically sits somewhere beyond 2030, depending on how flight testing goes and how fast regulators move. For now, the 2027 Dash 8-100 flight will be the proof of concept that either accelerates that process or exposes the gaps that remain.
