AI Is Driving a Hard Drive Renaissance — and a 100TB Disk Is Coming
Hard disk drives were supposed to be dying — written off as slow, noisy relics next to fast SSDs. Instead, AI data centers have triggered a full-scale HDD revival, gobbling up storage at a pace that flash memory can't match at any reasonable price. The knock-on effect is already hitting your wallet: consumer HDD prices have jumped 46–50% since September 2025, with a standard 4TB drive now running around $99 versus the $67–85 it cost a year ago.
Why AI loves spinning rust
The reason is straightforward economics. For "cold" data — the massive training datasets that feed AI models at companies like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft — HDDs store each terabyte at roughly 6 to 16 times less cost than SSDs. That gap is too large to ignore when you're filling entire warehouses with storage. Enterprise analyst firm TrendForce projects nearline HDD shipments will grow an average of 23% per year through 2030.
Western Digital's CEO has confirmed that the company's entire 2026 nearline HDD output is already sold out, with long-term supply agreements locked in through 2027–2028. Enterprise customers — Microsoft, Google, Meta — account for 89% of WD's revenue. Consumer buyers get what's left, which right now is very little and costs significantly more.
The race to 100TB
All three major HDD makers now have concrete roadmaps for drives that would have seemed implausible five years ago.
Seagate is already shipping 44TB drives to cloud providers using HAMR (heat-assisted magnetic recording), a laser-based technique that dramatically increases how much data fits on a single platter. The goal is 10TB per platter — enough to reach 100TB in a single enclosure within the next few years, per Tom's Hardware's HDD roadmap.

Western Digital is testing 40TB models now, with mass production targeted for late 2026. The company has officially confirmed a 100TB HAMR drive by 2029. Toshiba is taking a more conservative path via MAMR (microwave-assisted magnetic recording), with 12-platter drives already at 30–34TB, a 40TB model due in 2027, and 55TB-plus drives to follow.
Supply chain money is flowing in
The component suppliers behind these drives are scaling up fast. Japanese firm HOYA is investing $318 million in a new Vietnam factory to produce glass substrates for HDD platters. TDK is expanding magnetic head production. Resonac plans to increase platter output from 160 million to 210 million units per year.
For everyday consumers, the short-term picture is tight: WD CEO confirmed 2026 is sold out, and high-capacity drives (30TB and above) are effectively ring-fenced for hyperscalers through 2028. If you're building a NAS or home archive, expect higher prices and longer wait times. The upside is a new generation of genuinely massive, affordable-per-TB drives arriving over the next three to four years — assuming you're patient enough to wait for AI to finish eating first.
