Apple Watch Series 12 gets a new chip, not a new look
Apple's first chip upgrade in three years is coming to the Apple Watch this September, but don't expect anything new on the outside. Bloomberg Power On (Gurman) confirms both the Apple Watch Series 12 and Watch Ultra 4 are in late-stage testing ahead of a fall launch alongside the iPhone 18, with no major design changes for either model. The new T8320 chip is the headline — it's what makes on-wrist Siri AI in watchOS 27 possible without sending your data to a server.
The chip, not the case
The processor inside Apple Watch hasn't changed since the Series 9 in 2023. The T8320 ends that freeze, and its purpose is clear: running Apple Intelligence features locally on your wrist. Engadget (July 26) notes Gurman is explicit that the chip upgrade is about AI capability, not raw speed gains. Both Wi-Fi and cellular versions of the Series 12 are confirmed. There will be no Apple Watch SE 4 this year.
What isn't coming: Touch ID. Firmware leaks earlier this year hinted at a fingerprint sensor built into the display, but Gurman says battery space constraints rule it out. A full design refresh is reportedly at least one to two years away — expect that conversation to restart around 2027 or 2028.
Blood glucose and the long wait
The most-wanted health feature — non-invasive blood glucose monitoring — isn't arriving in 2026 either. The project dates back to the Steve Jobs era, making it roughly 15 years in development. Gurman says Apple remains committed but the technology won't be ready until the end of the decade at the earliest.
What to expect this fall
Series 12 is expected to start at around $429, up roughly $30 from the Series 11. Pre-orders should open the same week as Apple's September event, with units shipping within two weeks. The competition is moving fast: Samsung's Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 lands July 22 with a Snapdragon Wear chip and glucose rumors of its own, and Google's Pixel Watch 5 arrives in August with doubled RAM for on-device AI. Apple's answer is local processing with no on-device camera — a privacy pitch that sidesteps the controversies that have followed Meta's smart glasses.
A broader Apple Watch redesign is in the works, but this September is about what's inside the familiar case.
