iPad mini 2026 will be Apple's first water-resistant tablet

Apple's iPad mini is getting its biggest update in five years, and for the first time any iPad will carry official water resistance. The 2026 model — expected to launch in October — pairs an OLED display with a new speaker design that eliminates the grilles water tends to sneak through. The catch: the upgrades are likely to push the price from $599 to $699 or higher.

The engineering

To achieve water resistance, Apple engineered a vibration-based speaker system that removes the traditional speaker holes entirely. Instead of grilles, the tablet's chassis itself acts as a resonating surface to produce sound. With no openings for water to enter, the iPad mini can reach a protection level comparable to current iPhone models. Apple has not confirmed an exact IP rating — the IP68 figure circulating online is speculative — but MacRumors reports the target is iPhone-level resistance. Notably, Apple filed a patent for this kind of speaker technology back in 2014; it has taken over a decade to make it into a shipping product.

The OLED upgrade is the other headline change. iPad mini would become only the second iPad line to use OLED panels, after the iPad Pro. Samsung Display began mass production of those panels in June 2026, which is one reason Mark Gurman at Bloomberg pegged October as the launch window.

The price and the competition

Water resistance and OLED together are expensive additions. At $599 the current iPad mini already jumped $100 in June; the 2026 model is widely expected to land at $699–$799, which puts it uncomfortably close to the iPad Air 11-inch.

That price positioning matters because the iPad mini's main pitch has always been portability and value. At $700-plus it starts to bump into rivals that have offered water resistance for less: the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE and even the Kindle Paperwhite both carry water protection at significantly lower price points.

What to expect

The October 2026 window is on track per Gurman, but a memory chip shortage that began in June could delay shipments into early 2027 for some buyers. Pricing for the UK has not been announced; expect a figure broadly in line with the US-to-sterling conversion Apple typically applies.

If Apple confirms an IP68 or similar rating at launch, the iPad mini will be the first tablet in the lineup to match the durability of the iPhones it sits alongside in Apple's own retail shelves.
