Gothic hits consoles for the first time — 25 years after it launched on PC

The original Gothic — the German RPG that quietly influenced open-world design for a generation — is coming to consoles for the first time on July 28, 2026. THQ Nordic confirmed the port for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X at €29.99, roughly 25 years after the game first appeared on Windows in 2001. If you've only ever played Gothic on PC, or never played it at all, this is the easiest on-ramp yet.

What's actually new

This isn't a remaster. The developers adapted the interface and controls for a gamepad and applied resolution upscaling so the game holds up on modern TVs — but the underlying 2001 experience is untouched. Console performance is locked at 30 FPS with no performance mode on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S, so don't go in expecting a polished re-release. What you get is the original Gothic, playable from your couch.

Gothic II Complete Classic follows on September 29, 2026, with Gothic III Classic rounding out the trilogy on November 24 — both at €29.99 each. All three support PS4 and Xbox One as well as the current-generation hardware, per the THQ Nordic official announcement.

The free-copy angle

There's a meaningful pre-order incentive buried in the announcement. Buy the Gothic 1 Remake — the full Unreal Engine 5 rebuild that launched in June 2026 — and you get Gothic Classic digitally for free, available immediately on pre-order rather than on the July 28 release date. That's a practical way to check whether the original's notoriously obtuse design clicks with you before committing to the remake's full price. Why it matters now

THQ Nordic acquired Piranha Bytes, the Magdeburg-based studio behind the original trilogy, in 2019. The console ports are part of a broader 25th-anniversary push — legacy access alongside a flagship modernization. For anyone who knows Gothic only by reputation, or who remembers it fondly from a decade-old PC save, July 28 is a low-stakes way back in.
