MGS4 finally leaves PS3: Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol.2 arrives August 27

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has been stranded on PS3 since 2008 — longer than most current-gen consoles have existed. That changes on August 27, 2026, when Konami releases Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol.2 across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 simultaneously. Pre-orders are live now at $49.99 in the US, per Konami US (official).

The collection

Vol.2 bundles three titles. The headliner is MGS4, the conclusion of Solid Snake's story and arguably the most inaccessible entry in the franchise due to its unbroken PS3 exclusivity. Alongside it comes Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, the spin-off that bridges MGS3 and Ground Zeroes through Big Boss's arc. Rounding things out is Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (2000), the original Game Boy Color entry — a genuine rarity for most players.

The collection was announced February 12, 2026, at PlayStation's State of Play. Konami has been transparent that this isn't a full remaster. As with Vol.1, the focus is compatibility and stability rather than a visual overhaul — the original 720p/30fps baseline gets lifted to work cleanly on modern hardware, but don't expect a ground-up rebuild, as GameHub notes the notoriously complex Cell Processor architecture made a deep port a serious engineering challenge even at this stage.

Why it matters now

For anyone who missed MGS4 the first time — which is most people under 30 — this is the only legitimate way to play it on modern hardware. The game has never appeared on PC, Xbox, or any Nintendo platform. Emulation via RPCS3 was the only workaround for years.

This release also completes the core saga. With Vol.2, the full Metal Gear timeline from 1964 to 2014 is now playable on a single hardware generation without digging out old consoles or patching together emulators.
