Call of Duty: MW4 locks exclusive mission behind pre-order wall

Activision is locking an exclusive campaign mission behind a pre-order deadline for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and it may never come back. Pre-ordering MW4 unlocks early campaign access from October 16 — a full week before the October 23 launch — plus a timed-exclusive mission called Losing Ground that, per the Call of Duty official preorder page, will not be available to buyers after release. Activision has left a slim "maybe eventually" caveat, but nothing is confirmed.

The mission

Losing Ground puts players in a dense urban warzone on the Korean Peninsula, following a South Korean unit trying to hold the line against an enemy advance. The wider campaign tells its story from two perspectives: a South Korean soldier (Private Park) and series veteran Captain Price. It's the first time the franchise has set its campaign in Korea.

What you're paying

The standard edition is $70 — in line with recent CoD releases. The Vault edition runs $100, dropping to $90 with a 10% loyalty discount for players who own a Call of Duty title from 2019 or later. The Vault bundle includes a Battle Pass and other extras that Activision argues undercut competitors on value.

MW4 launches October 23 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and — for the first time in 13 years on a Nintendo platform — Nintendo Switch 2. PS4 and Xbox One are dropped entirely, pushing owners of older hardware toward a console upgrade.

The bigger picture

Time-gated exclusivity tied to pre-orders is becoming a fixture across major franchises, and MW4 leans in hard. Losing Ground isn't just early access — it may be permanently gone after launch day. Two beta windows are planned for August (one closed, one open), and Gamescom 2026 attendees will get hands-on time with a demo. If you want the full package from day one — including that exclusive mission — October 16 is the deadline that matters.
