Google's Pixel 11 Pro notification LEDs get an official name: HiLight
Google's upcoming Pixel 11 Pro will carry a notification LED strip built into its camera bar — and the feature now has an official name. Developer Dylan Roussel confirmed via 9to5Google that it's called HiLight, dropping the "Pixel Glow" placeholder that surfaced in Android 17 beta code. The rename matters because it signals Google is treating this as a consumer-facing product feature, not a background software toggle.
What HiLight actually does
When the phone is face-down, HiLight uses a strip of LEDs in the camera bar to show color-coded notifications without you needing to flip the phone over. The system supports the full RGB color spectrum, so you can assign distinct colors to different apps or contacts. Google has confirmed integration with Gemini — the AI assistant — and calls from favorite contacts. The motion effect mimics the spinning pinwheel animation familiar to Mac users.
Nothing Phone has offered a similar concept since its Glyph Interface launched, and the Nothing Phone (4a)'s Glyph Bar arrived in March 2026. HiLight borrows the same core idea, though Nothing's implementation uses a denser LED matrix. Where HiLight has an edge is deep software integration with Android and Gemini out of the box, which could make it genuinely useful rather than just decorative. Android Central notes the Pixel 11 Pro starts at $899 in the US — a $100 increase over the Pixel 10 Pro — so HiLight needs to justify that premium alongside the rest of the upgrade.

When to expect it
The Made by Google 2026 event is set for August 12 at 3 PM PT (that's August 13 at midnight CEST for UK viewers). Google is expected to announce the full Pixel 11 series alongside Pixel Watch 5, new Pixel Buds Pro, and a Pixel Tag tracker. US and UK retail availability for the Pixel 11 Pro is expected August 20, through the Google Store and carrier partners including Verizon, AT&T;, EE, and Vodafone UK.
HiLight is the kind of feature that sounds minor until your phone is sitting on a desk and you stop picking it up to check every buzz. Whether it lands as a productivity tool or a party trick will depend on how well Google's app ecosystem actually supports customizable color assignments at launch.
