Google's Pixel 11 HiLight: Nine colors, no screen required

Google is reviving the notification LED with a feature called HiLight on the Pixel 11 series — and it comes in nine colors. The RGB light sits inside the camera module and activates when the phone is face-down, letting you know who's calling or what your AI assistant is doing without picking up the device. No rival flagship — not the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, not OnePlus 13, not the iPhone 18 — offers anything equivalent.

The light, explained

Code found inside the Google Contacts app by 9to5Google confirms the HiLight name and its full color palette: blue, cyan, green, orange, pink, purple, turquoise, white, and yellow. Each color can be assigned to a contact or action, so a glance at the camera bar tells you exactly what needs your attention.

The feature locks in two confirmed use cases. First, calls from favorite contacts: HiLight glows a chosen color so you can identify who's ringing without flipping the phone over. Second, Gemini AI interactions: the light signals when Google's assistant is active or has completed a task. Google describes the animation as similar to a spinning pinwheel, adding a sense of motion rather than a static blink.

This is a deliberate nod to the digital detox movement — the idea that a subtle physical signal is less disruptive than a screen lighting up the room. Notification LEDs were standard on Android flagships until around 2015–2017, when always-on OLED displays made them seem redundant. How-To Geek frames HiLight as Google's answer to that cultural shift back toward less screen time.

Availability and price

Full HiLight details will land at the Made by Google 2026 event on August 12 at 6 PM ET (3 PM PT / 11 PM BST). The complete Pixel 11 lineup is expected to go on sale shortly after. Based on European pricing leaks — Pixel 11 from €999, Pixel 11 Pro from €1,199, Pro Fold from €1,999 — the US lineup is expected to rise roughly $100 compared to the Pixel 10, driven by Tensor G6 chip costs and the removal of the 128 GB storage option.

One open question: it isn't yet confirmed whether HiLight will ship on the standard Pixel 11 or only on Pro models. That clarity should come on August 12.
