CATL and BYD Both Target 2027 for Solid-State Batteries — But Mass Production Is Still Years Away

The world's two largest EV battery makers, CATL and BYD, have both confirmed 2027 as their target for small-scale trial production of solid-state batteries. That's a genuine milestone — but it isn't the same as putting them in cars you can buy. Mass production, according to Automotive World, won't arrive until 2030, and CATL has been blunt: the commercialisation supply chain is "still some distance away."

The patent push

BYD kicked off the latest round of competition by publishing six patents in late July 2026, covering a dual-electrolyte cathode architecture and sulfide-based chemistry. CATL responded by confirming its own 2027 pilot timeline to investors. The company currently sits at Technology Readiness Level 4 out of 9, with more than 1,000 engineers assigned to the programme, aiming to reach levels 7–8 by 2027, per CarNewsChina.

Solid-state batteries replace the liquid electrolyte in conventional lithium-ion cells with a solid material. That eliminates the fire risk from thermal runaway and pushes energy density from roughly 350 Wh/kg to around 500 Wh/kg — a 40-plus percent improvement. In plain terms: a lighter battery that holds more charge, which translates to longer range without adding weight.

What this means if you're shopping for an EV

For US and UK buyers, the practical timeline is straightforward — and sobering. No solid-state EVs will reach showrooms here before 2028–2029 at the earliest, and the first models will carry premium pricing well above $80,000 before costs come down around 2030. CATL has also explicitly denied circulating claims of 2,000 km range figures, signalling the company wants to manage expectations rather than chase headlines.

The competitive field is crowded. Toyota and Samsung SDI are both targeting 2027–2028 for their own solid-state programmes — Samsung SDI is aiming for 900 Wh/L energy density — while QuantumScape continues its push in the US, per EE Power. No single player has locked up a first-mover advantage yet.

CATL is also running a parallel track on lithium-sulfur batteries, which promise even higher energy density than solid-state cells and could make EVs meaningfully lighter. Pilot lines for those are also planned for 2027.

The bigger picture

2027 will mark a real proof-of-concept moment for solid-state technology — the point where lab results either survive contact with a production line or don't. The decade's genuinely transformative EVs, though, are a 2030 story. Until then, today's lithium-ion cars remain the only game in town.
