YouTube Premium Lite is rolling out worldwide — but it still won't be fully ad-free

YouTube is bringing its cheaper Premium Lite tier to every country where full Premium is available — a list that currently spans 60+ markets. The plan launched in the US in March 2025 at $7.99/month and has since spread to the UK, Germany, Australia, and more than 20 other countries. If you've been waiting for a lower-cost way to skip most YouTube ads, this is the closest thing on offer — with some real strings attached.

What you actually get

Premium Lite removes ads from standard YouTube videos and podcasts. That's the core pitch. What it doesn't cover is trickier: YouTube Music is excluded, and ads can still appear on Shorts and in music-adjacent content. Google does not guarantee a fully ad-free experience under this plan.

The tier launched without two features many users consider essential — background play (audio continuing when your screen is off) and offline downloads. Both were added globally in February 2026, per RouteNote, which narrows the gap with full Premium considerably. For commuters who just want to listen to a video with their phone pocketed, Lite now covers that.

YouTube Premium Lite is now available in more than 22 countries, with a global rollout underway.

Full Premium for individuals runs £12.99/month in the UK and $13.99/month in the US. Premium Lite is currently £7.99/month (UK) and $8.99/month (US) — the US price rose $1 in June 2026, according to U7Buy. That's a saving of roughly $5–6 a month if you already pay separately for Spotify or Apple Music and don't need YouTube Music bundled in.

The catch

The ad exclusions on Shorts and music content are the biggest practical limitation. YouTube Shorts is where a huge chunk of casual viewing happens, and those clips remain ad-supported under Lite. If you spend most of your YouTube time in Shorts or listening to music videos, Lite's value drops sharply.

There's no option for existing Premium subscribers to downgrade to Lite — you'd need to cancel and re-subscribe.

Availability

Premium Lite is live in the US and UK now, alongside Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Japan, Canada, Australia, India, and others. Google says it will expand to all 60+ Premium countries soon. Availability is rolling out gradually — not every account sees the option yet. Check your YouTube account settings under "Paid memberships" to see if it's available to you.
