Honor Play 80: a $150 5G phone built for basics, not bragging
Honor has launched the Play 80 in China at ¥1,029 — roughly $150 — making it one of the more affordable 5G phones on the market right now. The device runs on MediaTek's Dimensity 6300 chip, carries a large battery, and ships with Android 15 out of the box. There is no US, UK, or broader global release confirmed at this point.
The specs
The Dimensity 6300 is a 6nm octa-core processor — a chip that handles everyday tasks without breaking a sweat, but won't impress anyone trying to run demanding 3D games. Beebom confirms the chip scores 733 single-core and 1,813 multi-core on Geekbench, which is adequate for social media, maps, and messaging. It manages just 8.10 FPS in 3DMark Wild Life, so mobile gaming beyond casual titles is not really its territory. The GPU is a Mali-G57.
The display is a 6-inch-class 90Hz TFT LCD panel at 720×1600 resolution — smooth enough for scrolling, though pixel density sits around 260 ppi, which is middling by today's standards. You get a 13MP rear camera for daytime snapshots and a 5MP front camera for video calls. The headphone jack is retained, and the phone supports dual SIM.
The battery and the bottom line
The 5,300 mAh battery is the headline feature here. Combined with MediaTek's 5G UltraSave power efficiency, Honor positions this as an all-day phone — and given the modest screen resolution and chip power draw, that claim is plausible. No independent real-world endurance tests have been published yet.
At ¥1,029 (~$150), the Play 80 undercuts much of the budget 5G field globally, per iGeekphone. Comparable alternatives available in the US and UK right now — the Moto G47 5G and Poco M6 — start closer to $160–180. The Play 80 runs MagicOS 9 on top of Android 15, which adds Honor's own interface layer.
The 5,300 mAh battery is the Play 80's strongest selling point at this price.
No Western launch yet
Honor has not announced any distribution plans outside China for the standard Play 80. The brand has been rebuilding its global presence since its separation from Huawei, and availability varies significantly by region. Until Honor confirms a UK or US release — through a carrier or direct retail — this one stays a China exclusive. Worth watching if you're shopping for a budget 5G phone later in 2026, but nothing to act on right now.
