Waste The Fallen is a Lovecraftian extraction shooter that promises not to punish you

Extraction shooters are having a moment in 2026, and South Korean indie studio Royal Crow wants a piece of it. On August 13, the studio announced Waste The Fallen, a 1–3 player first-person shooter built around Lovecraftian cosmic horror. With ARC Raiders thriving, Marathon stumbling out of the gate, and Escape From Tarkov still entrenched, there's a real question about whether another entry can find an audience — but Royal Crow is betting that a less punishing approach will carve out space.

A Lovecraft shooter with a forgiving twist

The setting is called the Deep: a post-catastrophe world overrun by massive tentacled creatures known as the Fallen. You drop in, scavenge for loot, fight AI enemies and other players, and try to reach an extraction point — standard stuff for the genre. What sets Waste The Fallen apart is the atmosphere and a deliberate design choice to soften the genre's notorious sting.

Each character carries a Bio-Arm, a supernatural limb that grants unique abilities. Crucially, Bio-Arm upgrades carry over even if you die during a raid. An oversized safebox also lets you protect a portion of your loot from total loss. The deeper you push into the Deep, the higher the risk and the better the rewards — a risk-reward loop that feels familiar but is tuned to keep occasional players invested rather than punished into quitting.

Producer Byungnam Choi explained the thinking per GamesBeat: "We wanted to create a world where fear gradually takes hold of the player, and design a gameplay structure that encourages curiosity and deeper exploration rather than forcing players to lose everything from a single mistake."

The studio behind it

Royal Crow was founded in 2018 and is led by CEO Baek Seung-hoon, a veteran of Korean FPS development with credits including Sudden Attack and Dekaron, both produced during his time at GameHi. The team draws heavily from Korean shooter talent with backgrounds at Nexon-era studios. That pedigree doesn't guarantee success in the Western market, but it does suggest the team knows how to ship multiplayer shooters, per Inven Global.

What's confirmed so far

Waste The Fallen is coming to PC via Steam — no console ports announced. A closed alpha runs September 4–8, 2026, but it's limited to North America only. No release date or pricing has been confirmed, and the Steam page currently shows "Coming Soon" with no free-to-play or paid tier declared. If you're outside North America, you'll have to wait for a later test window. The Steam store page is live for wishlisting now.
