Marvel's New Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Puts Doctor Doom Front and Center

Marvel dropped a second trailer for Avengers: Doomsday at D23 on August 15, 2026, and this one is all about Doctor Doom. Unlike the first teaser — shown exclusively to attendees at Comic-Con 2024's Hall H — this two-minute clip zeroes in on Robert Downey Jr.'s transformation into the armored villain, with the line "he was broken" setting the tone for what's clearly a very different character from Tony Stark.

Downey himself walked onstage at D23 alongside Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell to introduce the footage, making the reveal a full-cast moment before the trailer even played.

The villain pitch

The MCU's founding hero playing its new primary villain is a genuine gamble. Downey built audience goodwill across 11 films as Iron Man, and now Marvel is asking those same viewers to root against him — or at least fear him. The trailer leans into that tension hard. Variety confirmed the clip focuses on Doom's visual transformation and threat, with Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm delivering the narration that warns the heroes of what's coming.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that the Russo Brothers credit Downey's voice performance as the moment that locked in the casting — apparently it was enough to give them chills on the first read-through.

The cast and the competition

Doomsday is Marvel's 39th MCU film and its most ambitious crossover yet. The ensemble pulls from three separate franchises: the core Avengers lineup (Chris Hemsworth, Simu Liu, Pedro Pascal), the Fantastic Four (Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach), and X-Men legacy actors including Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. Chris Evans also returns as Steve Rogers — his first appearance as Captain America since Endgame.

The film hits theaters December 18, 2026, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who previously helmed Infinity War and Endgame — the latter grossed $2.798 billion globally. That date puts Doomsday in direct competition with Dune: Part Three, making December 2026 one of the most crowded blockbuster slots in years. Production wrapped at Pinewood Studios in England in September 2025, with additional location work in Bahrain.

If the trailer is any indication, Marvel is betting that audiences are ready to see Downey on the other side of the fight.
