Marvel's Wolverine ships with a complete disc — no internet required to play

Marvel's Wolverine arrives on September 15, 2026, and Insomniac has confirmed every file needed to install and play the game is already on the disc. That means PS5 owners with the physical edition can start playing the moment installation finishes — no mandatory download required. It's a meaningful distinction in an era when most AAA disc releases still require multi-gigabyte day-one patches before the game will even launch.

The disc situation

Insomniac CTO Mike Fitzgerald acknowledged that a day-one patch will exist, and he recommends downloading it for a more polished experience. But the key word is "recommends." The patch is optional — the disc alone is fully functional. CBR reports this is a deliberate choice by the studio, not a last-minute achievement, and that the team kept working on polish knowing the core game was already disc-complete. This matters most for players with slow or capped internet connections, or anyone who simply wants to buy a game and play it the old-fashioned way.

The performance claim

Separately, Insomniac confirmed that Wolverine targets 60 FPS with ray tracing on a base PS5 — no PS5 Pro required. Push Square notes this is the first time the studio has hit that combined target on standard hardware at launch. Previous Insomniac titles either required the PS5 Pro for ray tracing at 60 FPS or launched with that mode locked behind a patch. The base PS5 has been on sale since November 2020, so this is a genuine win for the large installed base that never upgraded.

A shrinking window for physical releases

Sony confirmed it will stop producing physical game media in January 2028. Wolverine lands in September 2026, leaving roughly 14 months for any meaningful wave of disc releases before that window closes. That context makes the studio's commitment to a disc-complete release feel like more than a technical footnote — it's one of the last major PS5 exclusives that will ship this way.

A limited-edition Wolverine PS5 console and DualSense controllers also launch on September 15. The physical disc edition is available at retail — Amazon, GameStop, and Currys in the UK — from the same date.
