Ubisoft has announced Rainbow Six Tactics, a turn-based tactical spinoff that marks the franchise's first single-player campaign since Rainbow Six Vegas 2 in 2008. Revealed at gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, the game arrives in 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 at a fixed price of $50 with no in-game store or microtransactions — a notable departure from Ubisoft's live-service playbook.

A different kind of Rainbow Six

Developed by Ubisoft Paris — the studio behind Mario + Rabbids — Tactics drops the franchise's signature first-person shooting for an overhead, squad-based strategy format in the vein of modern XCOM, per GamesRadar+. Players take command as Six, the operation director role, with Vegas protagonist Paul Bishop returning as their on-the-ground leader.

The game features 15 recruitable Siege operators, 45 handcrafted maps, and more than 90 minutes of cutscenes. A spy-thriller narrative runs through the whole campaign. Squad management, HQ department upgrades, and synchronized breaching mechanics round out the core loop. Destructible environments are baked into the tactics — walls can be blown open to change sightlines, which the developers say gives it an edge over XCOM's fog-of-war formula.

The competition and the price

The turn-based tactics genre is crowded. Games like Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate, Phoenix Point, and Classified: France '44 all compete for the same audience. Tactics enters that field at $50, undercutting the standard $70 AAA price tag but asking more than the tactical roguelites that dominate storefronts. The no-microtransactions pledge is a genuine selling point given Ubisoft's recent history with live-service titles.

Kotaku confirms there is no in-game store of any kind, which Ubisoft has also stated directly to IGN. The Switch 2 release is an unusual move for a franchise of this scale in the tactics genre and could widen the game's reach beyond the PC audience that typically dominates the category.

What to watch for

A 2027 release window leaves room for more details on difficulty settings, mod support, and whether the Siege operator roster will expand before launch. For fans who remember the original Rainbow Six's deliberate, punishing mission planning, Tactics looks like the closest the series has come to that DNA since the FPS era took over.
