Rockstar breaks silence on GTA VI leak — and it's more regret than apology
Rockstar Games has published its first public response to last week's GTA VI gameplay leak, calling it a "heavy blow" but stopping short of a formal apology. The statement, posted via the Rockstar Games official statement on X, confirms the game is nearly finished and still on track for a November 19, 2026 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The leak and the letter
On August 18, a group calling itself Cyberleek posted gameplay footage and map screenshots from GTA VI — images Rockstar had never authorized for release. The studio's response, addressed to fans as "Dear Friends," frames the breach as a blow to the creative reveal the team had planned after years of development. "It would be an understatement to say that the leak of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay footage in this state was a heavy blow to our team," Rockstar wrote, adding that they had always intended to show the game "very differently."
The letter thanks fans who sent messages of support and asks everyone to wait until November 19 to experience the game properly — despite the spoilers now circulating online. An extended look was scheduled for August 27 on Netflix, with a YouTube upload to follow six hours later.

Why Cyberleek did it
Cyberleek's motivation wasn't simply attention. The group's manifesto — detailed via godisageek.com — frames the leak as protest against digital-only distribution and what it calls anti-consumer practices. The group pointed specifically to Ubisoft shutting down The Crew and the broader Stop Killing Games movement as precedents justifying its actions. It demanded a public apology from Rockstar, threatening further disruptions if none came.
That complaint lands awkwardly for Rockstar. Physical "boxed" copies of GTA VI will ship as download codes only — no disc media included. Retailers including GameStop, Amazon, and Best Buy are selling those code boxes, not cartridges or discs. For buyers who want a resaleable or collector's copy, there is no option at launch.
The price and what you get
The standard edition is priced at $79.99 USD — a new high-water mark for a AAA release. An Ultimate edition runs $99.99. Pre-orders opened June 25, 2026. There is no confirmed PC version at launch.
Rockstar says a more detailed reveal is coming "soon." Whether that changes the conversation around pricing and digital lock-in — the core of Cyberleek's complaint — remains to be seen.
